Reported speech (estilo indirecto) is used to tell someone what another person said, without using their exact words.
| Direct speech | Reported speech |
|---|---|
| Present Simple: "I like pizza." | Past Simple: He said he liked pizza. |
| Present Continuous: "I am studying." | Past Continuous: She said she was studying. |
| Past Simple: "I went home." | Past Perfect: He said he had gone home. |
| Will: "I will call you." | Would: She said she would call me. |
| Can: "I can swim." | Could: He said he could swim. |
Direct: "I am going to the cinema tomorrow," said María.
Reported: María said (that) she was going to the cinema the next day.
We use "asked" + if/whether (yes/no questions) or question word (wh-questions). The word order changes to subject + verb (NOT question order).
"Do you like football?" -> He asked me if I liked football.
"Where do you live?" -> She asked me where I lived.
