Extension and Summary: Reported Speech
Exercises- Reporting verbs: besides "said" and "told", use: suggested, advised, promised, warned, reminded. Write a sentence with each.
- Report a news interview (write 5 direct quotes, then report them).
- When do we NOT change the tense? (General truths: He said the Earth goes round the Sun.) Write 3 examples.
- Gossip game in writing: Person A says something, B reports to C, C reports to D. Show how the message changes.
- Write a diary entry reporting everything that happened and was said at a party.
Summary- Tense backshift: present->past, past->past perfect, will->would, can->could.
- Statements: He said (that) + subject + verb.
- Questions: He asked + if/whether + statement order (no question marks, no inversion).
- Commands: He told me + to/not to + infinitive.
- Pronoun changes: I->he/she, we->they, you->I/me, my->his/her.
- Time changes: today->that day, tomorrow->the next day, yesterday->the day before, here->there.
