Relative Clauses
Relative clauses give extra information about a noun. They are introduced by relative pronouns.
Relative pronouns| Pronoun | Use | Example |
|---|
| who | people | The girl who lives next door is my friend. |
| which | things/animals | The book which I read was great. |
| that | people or things | The film that we saw was exciting. |
| where | places | The city where I was born is small. |
| when | times | I remember the day when we met. |
| whose | possession | The man whose car was stolen called the police. |
Defining vs. Non-defining- Defining: essential information (no commas). "The students who study hard pass the exam." (which students? the ones who study hard)
- Non-defining: extra information (with commas). "My brother, who lives in London, is a doctor." (we already know which brother)
Remember
In defining relative clauses, "that" can replace "who" or "which". In non-defining clauses, you CANNOT use "that".
Exercises- Complete with who, which, where, when or whose: a) The woman ___ I met was very kind. b) The restaurant ___ we ate was excellent. c) The boy ___ dog bit me apologized.
- Join the sentences using a relative pronoun: a) This is the teacher. She teaches us Maths. b) I visited a city. The city is very old.
- Add commas if the relative clause is non-defining: a) My sister who is 15 plays basketball. (I have only one sister.) b) Students who arrive late must wait outside. (Some students, not all.)
