Relative Clauses - Worked examples and exercises
Worked example
Example 1 - Defining: "The woman who lives next door is a doctor." This clause is essential - without it, we don't know WHICH woman. No commas.
Worked example
Example 2 - Non-defining: "My mother, who is a doctor, works at the hospital." This clause is extra information - we already know who "my mother" is. With commas. We cannot use "that" in non-defining clauses.
