Advanced exercises

  1. Write definitions using relative clauses: "A dictionary is a book which..." Do 6 definitions.
  2. Combine each pair using a relative clause: "I met a woman. Her daughter won the competition." (whose) Do 4 more pairs.
  3. When can we omit the relative pronoun? Explain the rule and write 3 examples.
  4. Write a paragraph about your town using at least 4 relative clauses (mix defining and non-defining).
  5. Rewrite without relative clauses: "The book that I read last week was exciting." -> "I read a book last week. It was exciting." Do 3 more. Which version sounds better?
Topic summary
  • Who: people. Which/That: things. Where: places. When: times. Whose: possession.
  • Defining: essential info, no commas, "that" OK. "The man who called is my uncle."
  • Non-defining: extra info, WITH commas, NO "that". "My uncle, who is 50, lives in Madrid."
  • We can omit who/which/that when they are the object: "The book (that) I read."
  • We CANNOT omit when they are the subject: "The man who called" (cannot remove "who").
