Reading Comprehension - Worked examples and exercises
Worked example
Example 1 - Identifying main idea: "Every paragraph has a main idea, usually in the first sentence (topic sentence). The other sentences support it with details, examples or evidence." To find the main idea, ask: "What is this paragraph about in one sentence?"
Worked example
Example 2 - Making inferences: "John looked at his watch, grabbed his bag and ran out of the door." We can infer that John was late or in a hurry. The text doesn't say this directly, but the actions (looked at watch, ran) tell us.
Worked example
Example 3 - Identifying opinion vs fact: "Mount Everest is 8,849 metres tall" = FACT (can be verified). "Mount Everest is the most beautiful mountain" = OPINION (personal view). Look for clue words: "I think", "in my opinion", "the best" = opinion.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way we live and work. AI systems can now recognise faces, translate languages, drive cars and even write stories. In medicine, AI helps doctors analyse X-rays and detect diseases earlier. In education, AI-powered apps can personalise learning for each student. However, many people are worried about AI. Some fear that robots will replace human workers. Others are concerned about privacy, as AI systems collect huge amounts of personal data. Experts say that the key is to develop AI responsibly, with rules to protect people's rights. The future of AI will depend on the choices we make today.
