The plastic pollution crisis is one of the most serious environmental problems of our time. Every year, around 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our oceans. This plastic breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics, which are eaten by fish and other marine animals. Scientists have found microplastics everywhere, from the deepest ocean trenches to the highest mountain peaks. Even more alarming, microplastics have been detected in human blood and lungs. While recycling helps, it is not enough - only 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled. Many countries are now banning single-use plastics such as bags, straws and bottles. Experts agree that reducing plastic production is the most effective solution.
