The Great Wall of China is one of the most impressive structures ever built. The first walls were built more than 2,500 years ago, and during the Qin Dynasty (221 BC) many of them were joined together. It was built to protect China from invasions from the north. The wall stretches for more than 21,000 kilometres across mountains, deserts and plains.
