Practice text

The Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world. It is located off the coast of Queensland, in northeastern Australia. The reef stretches over 2,300 kilometres and can even be seen from space.

The Great Barrier Reef is home to an incredible variety of marine life. It contains over 1,500 species of fish, 400 types of coral, and many species of dolphins, sharks, turtles and whales. Scientists consider it one of the most complex natural ecosystems on Earth.

Unfortunately, the reef is in danger. Climate change is causing the ocean temperature to rise, which leads to coral bleaching. When the water gets too warm, the coral turns white and can die. Pollution from farming and tourism also damages the reef.

Many organisations are working to protect the Great Barrier Reef. The Australian government has created protected areas where fishing is not allowed. Scientists are researching new ways to help the coral recover. Everyone can help by reducing pollution and learning about the importance of our oceans.
