Present Tenses: Simple, Continuous, and their Uses

English has two main present tenses, each with distinct uses. Mastering them is essential for accurate communication at B1+ level.

Present Simple

Form: Subject + base form (+ -s/-es for 3rd person singular)

Uses:

Present Continuous

Form: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Uses:

Recuerda
Stative verbs (know, believe, want, need, belong, seem, love, hate, prefer, understand, mean, remember) are NOT normally used in continuous tenses: "I know the answer" (NOT "I am knowing"). However, some stative verbs can be used in continuous form when they describe an action, not a state: "I am thinking about the problem" (= considering) vs. "I think you are right" (= believe).
Ejemplo
"She has a car" (state = possession).
"She is having lunch" (action = eating).
"He sees the point" (state = understands).
"He is seeing the doctor tomorrow" (action = visiting).
