Obligation and necessity

Recuerda
"Must not" and "do not have to" have completely different meanings. "You must not smoke here" = It is prohibited. "You do not have to come" = It is not necessary, but you can if you want. Confusing them is a serious error.

Needn't have done vs. didn't need to do

Permission

Ejemplo
"You needn't have waited for me." = You waited, but it was unnecessary. I am sorry you did.
"You didn't need to wait for me." = Waiting was not necessary. Maybe you waited, maybe you did not.
