→ The thief is believed to have escaped through the window.

Si el verbo de opinión está en pasado, la estructura también: People thought that the house was haunted. → It was thought that the house was haunted. / The house was thought to be haunted.

2. Have something done (causativa). Estructura: have + objeto + participio.

We had the kitchen painted last year. / I will have my eyes tested tomorrow. En inglés informal también se usa get: I got my phone fixed.

The company is reported to be in trouble.

Ejemplo

Transforma de dos maneras: People expect that prices will rise.

  1. Con It: It is expected that prices will rise.
  2. Con el sujeto de la oración: Prices are expected to rise.

Reescribe con have something done: A mechanic repaired my dad's car yesterday. → My dad had his car repaired yesterday.

Ejercicios

The thief ___ to have escaped through the window.

I don't cut my own hair. I ___ at the hairdresser's every month.

Essay Writing & Relative Clauses avanzadas

  2. Body paragraph 1: primer argumento con ejemplo.
  3. Body paragraph 2: segundo argumento con ejemplo.
  4. (Body paragraph 3): contraargumento (opcional) y refutación.
  5. Conclusion (Conclusión): resumen y opinión final.

Opinion Essay: ejemplo completo

📖 Reading comprehension
Topic: "Social media is harmful for teenagers." Do you agree?

Introduction:
Social media has become an essential part of teenagers' lives. However, there is a growing debate about whether it is harmful. In my opinion, while social media has some benefits, it can be dangerous for young people if not used responsibly.

Body paragraph 1:
Firstly, social media can have a negative effect on teenagers' mental health. Studies have shown that spending too much time on social media can lead to anxiety and depression. For example, many teenagers compare themselves to the perfect images they see online, which makes them feel inadequate.

Body paragraph 2:
Furthermore, social media can be addictive. Many teenagers spend hours scrolling through their feeds instead of studying, exercising, or sleeping. As a result, their academic performance and physical health can suffer.

Body paragraph 3 (contraargumento):
On the other hand, some people argue that social media helps teenagers stay connected with friends and family. This is true; however, these connections are often superficial and cannot replace face-to-face communication.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, I believe that social media can be harmful for teenagers, especially when it is used excessively. It is important for young people to learn to use it responsibly and to balance their online and offline lives.

Relative Clauses avanzadas

The person who I spoke to...The person to whom I spoke...
The topic which we talked about...The topic about which we talked...
The house which I live in...The house in which I live...

📘 Ejemplo
Con participio presente (-ing):
The man who is standing there is my uncle. → The man standing there is my uncle.
The students who are studying English... → The students studying English...

Con participio pasado (PP):
The book which was written by Cervantes... → The book written by Cervantes...
The paintings which were stolen last night... → The paintings stolen last night...
