Present Perfect vs Past Simple

En 2.º de ESO aprendimos el Present Perfect y el Past Simple por separado. Ahora vamos a entender cuándo usar cada uno, ya que es una de las dificultades más importantes del inglés para los hispanohablantes.

En español, usamos el pretérito perfecto («he comido») y el pretérito indefinido («comí») de forma parecida, pero en inglés la distinción es muy importante.

Regla fundamental

⚠️ Importante
Past Simple: la acción ocurrió en un momento concreto del pasado (yesterday, last week, in 2020, when I was 10...).

Present Perfect: no especificamos cuándo ocurrió, o la acción tiene conexión con el presente (ever, never, already, yet, just, recently, this week, today...).

📘 Ejemplo
Con tiempo concreto → Past Simple:
I went to the cinema last Saturday.
She bought a new phone two days ago.
We visited Rome in 2023.

Sin tiempo concreto / conexión con el presente → Present Perfect:
I have been to the cinema. (alguna vez, no digo cuándo)
She has just bought a new phone. (acaba de comprar, resultado presente)
I have visited Rome three times. (experiencia total hasta ahora)

Especial: BEEN vs GONE
She has been to París. = Ha estado en París (fue y volvió).
She has gone to París. = Se ha ido a París (está allí ahora, no ha vuelto).

FOR y SINCE con Present Perfect

For + duración. Since + punto de inicio:

Read the interview:

Interviewer: Welcome to the show, Marta! Tell us about yourself.
Marta: Well, I'm 15 and I'm from Valencia. I've lived here all my life.
Interviewer: Have you ever travelled abroad?
Marta: Yes, I have. I've been to France, Italy and Portugal. I went to France last summer with my family. We stayed in a small village near Nice for two weeks. It was wonderful! I visited Italy in 2023 with my school.
Interviewer: What languages do you speak?
Marta: I speak Spanish and Valencian, and I've studied English since I was 6. I've also started learning French this year. I haven't learned much yet, but I really enjoy it.

📋 Resumen de la lección
  • Past Simple: momento concreto del pasado (yesterday, last year, in 2020, ago).
  • Present Perfect: sin tiempo concreto, conexión con el presente (ever, never, just, already, yet).
  • For + duración. Since + punto de inicio.
  • Been = fue y volvió. Gone = se fue y no ha vuelto.
  • Si dices cuándo, usa Past Simple. Si no dices cuándo, usa Present Perfect.
