Past Simple, Continuous and Used to

Past Continuous (Pasado continuo)

El Past Continuous (también llamado Past Progressive) se usa para describir acciones que estaban en progreso en un momento del pasado. En español equivale a «estaba + gerundio»: «Yo estaba estudiando» → I was studying.

¿Cómo se forma?

La estructura es: sujeto + was/were + verbo con -ing

📌 Recuerda
Es como el Present Continuous, pero cambiando am/is/are por was/were:
• I am reading. (ahora) → I was reading. (en el pasado)
• They are playing. (ahora) → They were playing. (en el pasado)

Forma negativa

¿Cuándo usamos el Past Continuous?

1. Acción en progreso en un momento del pasado:
At 8 o'clock last night, I was watching TV.
(A las 8 de anoche, estaba viendo la tele.)

2. Dos acciones simultáneas en el pasado:
While I was studying, my brother was playing video games.
(Mientras yo estudiaba, mi hermano jugaba a videojuegos.)

3. Acción larga interrumpida por una acción corta (Past Simple):
I was walking to school when it started to rain.
(Estaba caminando al colegio cuando empezó a llover.)
She was cooking dinner when the phone rang.
(Estaba cocinando la cena cuando sonó el teléfono.)

Read the story:

It was a normal Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. López were at home. Mrs. López was cooking dinner in the kitchen. She was making her famous chicken with rice. Mr. López was sitting in the living room. He was reading the newspaper and listening to the radio. Their daughter Claudia was doing her homework in her bedroom. She was writing an essay for English class. Their son Miguel was playing video games in his room. Suddenly, there was a loud noise outside! Everyone stopped what they were doing and ran to the window. A big tree had fallen on the road! While they were looking at the tree, the neighbours came out of their houses too. It was very exciting!

📋 Resumen de la lección
  • El Past Continuous = was/were + verbo-ing.
  • Was → I / he / she / it. Were → you / we / they.
  • Se usa para acciones en progreso en el pasado.
  • When + Past Simple (acción corta). While + Past Continuous (acción larga).
  • No confundir: Past Simple = acción completa. Past Continuous = acción en progreso.
