Advanced exercises
- Rewrite this active paragraph in passive: "Workers grow coffee in Colombia. They pick the beans by hand. Machines wash them. They dry them in the sun. Companies export the coffee worldwide."
- Write a short news article (6 sentences) using passive voice: "A bank was robbed yesterday..."
- Compare: "They are building a new bridge" vs "A new bridge is being built." Which sounds more formal? When do we use each?
- Write 5 passive sentences about historical events: "America was discovered...", "The pyramids were built..."
- Write a "How it's made" paragraph about bread, chocolate or paper using passive voice throughout.
Topic summary- Passive: subject + be + past participle (+ by agent).
- Present: is/are + pp. Past: was/were + pp. Future: will be + pp.
- Present Perfect: has/have been + pp. Present Continuous: is/are being + pp.
- Use passive when: who did it is unknown, obvious, or less important than the action.
- "By + agent" is optional and often omitted.
