Modal Verbs - Worked examples and exercises
Worked example
Example 1: Choose: can, could, must, should, may.
"_____ I open the window?" (polite permission)
Answer: May I open the window? (very polite) or Can I open the window? (less formal). "May" is more polite than "can" for asking permission.
Worked example
Example 2: What is the difference between "must" and "have to"?
Answer: Must = personal obligation (the speaker decides): "I must study more." Have to = external obligation (rules, laws): "I have to wear a uniform at school." In the past, we can only use "had to" (not "musted").
Worked example
Example 3: "You _____ touch the paintings in the museum." (prohibition)
Answer: You mustn't touch the paintings. Mustn't = prohibition (absolutely not allowed). Compare with "don't have to" = not necessary: "You don't have to come" (it is your choice).
