Writing: Short Emails and Postcards

Writing an email

An informal email to a friend has this structure:

To: [email protected]

Subject: My holiday!

Hi Sara!

How are you? I'm writing to tell you about my holiday.

I'm in Barcelona with my family. The weather is great! Yesterday we visited the Sagrada Familia. It was amazing! Tomorrow we are going to go to the beach.

What are you doing this summer?

Write back soon!

Love,
Ana

Parts of an email

  1. Greeting: Hi / Dear + name
  2. Opening: How are you? I hope you are well.
  3. Body: The main message (what you want to tell).
  4. Question: Ask something to keep the conversation going.
  5. Closing: Write back soon! / See you soon!
  6. Sign off: Love, / Best wishes, + your name

Writing a postcard

A postcard is shorter than an email. It usually talks about a holiday.

Dear Grandma,

Greetings from London! I'm having a great time. Today we visited the Tower of London. The weather is cold but sunny. I bought you a present!

See you next week!

Love, Pablo
