Past Simple: regular verbs
For regular verbs, we add -ed to the base form to make the past:
| Rule | Base form | Past |
|---|
| Most verbs: add -ed | play | played |
| Verbs ending in -e: add -d | like | liked |
| Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to -ied | study | studied |
| Short verbs (CVC): double + -ed | stop | stopped |
Example
Yesterday I played football with my friends.
She watched TV last night.
We studied English last week.
They walked to school yesterday.
Negative and questions
Example
Negative: I didn't play football. (did not + base form)
Question: Did you play football? Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
Careful: Did she play? (NOT: Did she played?)
Remember
Affirmative: verb + ed (played, watched, studied)
Negative: didn't + base verb (didn't play, didn't watch)
Questions: Did + subject + base verb? (Did you play?)
