Narrative tenses: Past Simple, Past Continuous, Past Perfect

Mastering narrative tenses is essential for B2-level writing and Use of English. These tenses work together to create clear, well-structured narratives.

1. Past Simple

Used for completed actions in the past, forming the backbone of a narrative.

Ejemplo
The train arrived late. She grabbed her bag and ran to the platform. -- Three completed actions in sequence.

2. Past Continuous

Used for actions in progress at a specific moment in the past. Provides background or context to a narrative.

Ejemplo
The sun was setting when the phone rang. -- Background action (setting) interrupted by a completed event (rang).
While she was reading, he was cooking dinner. -- Two parallel ongoing actions.

3. Past Perfect

Used for an action that happened before another past action. It creates a clear chronological order when the narrative does not follow linear time.

Ejemplo
By the time she arrived, the train had already left. -- The leaving (had left) happened before the arriving (arrived).
He realised he had forgotten his wallet. -- The forgetting happened before the realising.

4. Past Perfect Continuous

Used for an ongoing action before another past action, emphasising duration.

Ejemplo
She was exhausted because she had been running for two hours. -- Emphasis on duration before the past moment.
Recuerda
In narrative writing (EVAU), combine these tenses: Past Simple for the main events, Past Continuous for background description, Past Perfect for flashbacks or earlier events. This creates a sophisticated, well-structured text.
