Advanced modals: deduction, speculation and regret
Modal verbs for deduction and regret are key B2 grammar points that frequently appear in EVAU examinations.
1. Modals for present deduction
- Must + infinitive: almost certain (logical deduction). She must be tired. She's been working all day.
- Can't / Couldn't + infinitive: almost certain it's NOT true. He can't be at home. His car isn't there.
- May / Might / Could + infinitive: possible but uncertain. She might be at the library.
2. Modals for past deduction
- Must have + past participle: almost certain about the past. He's not answering. He must have left already.
- Can't / Couldn't have + past participle: almost certain it DIDN'T happen. She can't have forgotten. I reminded her twice.
- May / Might / Could have + past participle: possibly happened. He might have missed the train.
Ejemplo
Situation: John isn't at work today.
He must be ill. (I'm almost sure -- he never misses work.)
He might be on holiday. (It's possible -- I'm not sure.)
He can't be at a meeting. (Impossible -- his calendar is empty.)
3. Modals for regret and criticism
- Should have + past participle: regret about something you didn't do, or criticism. You should have told me earlier! (But you didn't tell me.)
- Shouldn't have + past participle: regret about something you DID do. I shouldn't have eaten so much. (But I did eat too much.)
- Could have + past participle: missed opportunity. You could have asked for help. (But you didn't.)
- Needn't have + past participle: unnecessary action that was done. You needn't have bought so much food. (You bought it, but it wasn't necessary.)
Recuerda
Key distinction for EVAU: "must have" (deduction about the past) vs "had to" (obligation in the past). "He must have left" = I think he left. "He had to leave" = He was obliged to leave.
