Reading comprehension: B2 strategies and practice
The EVAU reading comprehension section tests your ability to understand B2-level texts (articles, essays, extracts) and answer questions accurately.
1. Reading strategies
- Skimming: read quickly for the general idea. Read the title, first and last paragraphs, first sentence of each paragraph.
- Scanning: look for specific information (names, dates, numbers, key words).
- Detailed reading: read carefully for full comprehension. Focus on linking words, reference words (this, that, it, they), and the author's opinion.
- Guessing meaning from context: use the surrounding words and the general topic to infer the meaning of unknown vocabulary.
2. Types of questions
- True/False/Not Given: distinguish between information that is stated (true), contradicted (false) or not mentioned (not given).
- Multiple choice: read all options carefully before choosing. Eliminate clearly wrong answers first.
- Comprehension questions: answer in your own words. Do NOT copy sentences from the text.
- Vocabulary in context: explain the meaning of a word or find a synonym/antonym.
Recuerda
Key EVAU rule: when answering comprehension questions, you MUST use your own words. Copying directly from the text is penalised. Paraphrase: change the vocabulary and grammar while keeping the meaning.

EVAU-style reading text:
"The rise of artificial intelligence has sparked a heated debate about the future of work. While optimists argue that AI will create new types of jobs we cannot yet imagine, pessimists fear massive unemployment as machines replace human workers in sector after sector. A recent report by the World Economic Forum estimates that by 2030, AI and other technological changes will have displaced 92 million jobs worldwide, but they will also have created 170 million new ones. The challenge, according to the report, lies not in the total number of jobs but in the mismatch between the skills workers currently have and those the new economy will demand. Education systems, the report argues, must be radically transformed to prepare young people for a world where adaptability, creativity and digital literacy are more valuable than memorising facts."
Questions:
1. According to the text, what is the main concern about AI and employment? (Answer in your own words.)
2. How many jobs does the World Economic Forum predict AI will create by 2030?
3. What does the word "mismatch" mean in this context?
4. What skills does the text suggest will be most important in the future? (Answer in your own words.)
5. Are the following statements True, False or Not Given?
a) AI will create more jobs than it destroys.
b) The report was published in 2024.
c) Workers need different skills from the ones they currently have.
Ejercicios- Read a B2-level article from a newspaper or magazine and write five comprehension questions (two True/False/Not Given, two open-ended, one vocabulary).
- Practice paraphrasing: rewrite these sentences in your own words without changing the meaning: a) "Education systems must be radically transformed." b) "Adaptability is more valuable than memorising facts."
