Essential exam writing tips

  1. Plan before you write: Spend 3-5 minutes brainstorming and organising your ideas.
  2. Count your words: Stay within the word limit (150-180). Too short or too long will be penalised.
  3. Use paragraphs: Each paragraph = one main idea. Indent or leave a line between paragraphs.
  4. Use connectors: They make your text coherent and show a range of language.
  5. Vary your vocabulary: Avoid repeating the same words. Use synonyms and paraphrasing.
  6. Vary your grammar: Use a range of structures (conditionals, passive, relative clauses, modals).
  7. Check your work: Leave 3-5 minutes to proofread for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
  8. Match the register: Formal for essays, letters, and reports. Informal only for personal emails/letters.
