Third Conditional and Mixed Conditionals
Third Conditional
Form: If + past perfect, would + have + past participle
Use: Unreal situations in the past - imagining a different past and its hypothetical result:
- "If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam." (But I did not study hard, so I failed.)
- "If she had not missed the bus, she would not have been late." (But she did miss it.)
- "We would have gone to the beach if the weather had been better."
Recuerda
The third conditional always refers to the past and to situations that CANNOT be changed. It often expresses regret: "If only I had listened to your advice..."
Mixed Conditionals
Mixed conditionals combine elements from different conditional types when the time in the if-clause differs from the time in the main clause:
Type 1: Past condition --> Present result
Form: If + past perfect, would + base form
"If I had accepted that job (past), I would be living in London now (present)."
"If she had not broken her leg (past), she would be playing in the match today (present)."
Type 2: Present condition --> Past result
Form: If + past simple, would + have + past participle
"If I spoke French (present - but I do not), I would have applied for that job (past)."
"If he were more careful (present - general trait), he would not have had the accident (past)."
