Extension and Summary: Relative Clauses
Exercises- Reduced relative clauses: "The woman sitting next to me is my teacher" (= who is sitting). Write 5 reduced relatives.
- Write definitions for 10 words using relative clauses (e.g., "A dictionary is a book which contains definitions of words.").
- Write a description of your town/city using at least 5 relative clauses (3 defining, 2 non-defining).
- "What" as relative: "I don't understand what you mean." Write 3 sentences with "what" meaning "the thing which".
- Write a quiz: give 5 definitions using relative clauses and ask your classmates to guess the words.
Summary- Who: people. Which: things. That: people or things (defining only). Where: places. When: times. Whose: possession.
- Defining: essential information, no commas, "that" allowed.
- Non-defining: extra information, commas, "that" NOT allowed.
- Omit relative pronoun when it is the OBJECT (not subject) of the clause.
- Test: if removing the clause changes the meaning -> defining. If not -> non-defining.
