Modal Verbs: Can, Must, Should

Modal verbs are special verbs that add meaning to the main verb. They do not change form (no -s, no -ed, no -ing).

Can
  • Ability: I can swim. She can speak three languages.
  • Permission: Can I go to the toilet? You can use my pen.
  • Negative: can't / cannot. I can't drive.
Must
  • Obligation: You must wear a uniform at school.
  • Strong recommendation: You must see that film -- it's amazing!
  • Negative (mustn't): prohibition. You mustn't use your phone in class.
Should
  • Advice: You should study more. She should see a doctor.
  • Negative: shouldn't. You shouldn't eat so much sugar.
Remember
Modal verbs are always followed by the infinitive WITHOUT "to": I can swim (NOT: I can to swim). He must go (NOT: He must to go).
