Advanced exercises

  1. Prepare and deliver a 3-minute presentation about a topic you are passionate about. Use visual aids (real or described).
  2. Conduct a debate: divide into two teams and debate "Should animals be kept in zoos?" Prepare arguments, rebuttals and a conclusion.
  3. Role play a job interview: one student is the interviewer, the other the candidate. Prepare 10 questions and answers.
  4. Describe a process in English (how to make your favourite meal, how to play a game). Use sequencing words.
  5. Record yourself speaking for 2 minutes about "My life so far and my plans for the future." Listen back and identify 3 things to improve.
Topic summary
  • Presentations: introduction ("Today I will talk about...") -> main points -> conclusion -> questions.
  • Agreeing: "I agree", "Good point". Disagreeing: "I see your point, but...", "I disagree because..."
  • Clarification: "Could you repeat that?", "What do you mean?", "Could you explain?"
  • Fluency tips: don't worry about mistakes, use fillers ("well", "let me think"), make eye contact.
  • Practice: speak English every day, even to yourself. The more you practise, the better you get!
