Advanced exercises

  1. Rewrite this paragraph in passive voice: "People grow coffee in Brazil. Workers pick the beans by hand. They dry them in the sun. Machines grind the beans. Shops sell the coffee everywhere."
  2. Write 5 sentences about famous inventions using passive: "The telephone was invented by..."
  3. When do we use passive without "by"? Write 3 examples and explain why.
  4. Write a recipe in passive voice: "First, the eggs are broken. Then, the flour is added..."
  5. Compare active and passive: When is each one better? Write a paragraph explaining with examples.
Topic summary
  • Passive Voice: subject + be + past participle (+ by + agent).
  • Present passive: am/is/are + past participle: "Coffee is grown in Brazil."
  • Past passive: was/were + past participle: "America was discovered in 1492."
  • Use passive when: the action is more important than who did it, or we don't know who did it.
  • "By + agent" is optional and often omitted when obvious or unknown.
