Worked example
Example 1: How to write a good paragraph.
Answer: Every paragraph needs: 1. Topic sentence (main idea, first sentence). 2. Supporting sentences (details, examples, reasons). 3. Concluding sentence (summary or final thought). Example: "Football is my favourite sport. (topic) I play every Saturday with my team. We train twice a week. Last year we won the league. (supporting) I hope to keep playing football for many years. (concluding)"

Example 2: How to write an opinion essay.
Answer: Structure: Introduction (state your opinion). Body paragraph 1 (first reason + example). Body paragraph 2 (second reason + example). Conclusion (restate opinion). Use: "In my opinion...", "I believe...", "Firstly...", "Moreover...", "In conclusion..."

Example 3: How to write a story.
Answer: Structure: Setting (when and where). Characters (who). Problem (what goes wrong). Events (what happens). Resolution (how it ends). Use past tenses, descriptive adjectives and direct speech to make it interesting.
Exercises- Write a topic sentence for a paragraph about: a) your school, b) your best friend, c) your favourite food.
- Write a complete paragraph (5 sentences) about your favourite animal.
- Write the introduction for an opinion essay on: "Should children have mobile phones?"
- Write 5 sentences for a story that begins: "It was a dark and stormy night..."
- Improve this sentence: "The dog was big." -> Make it more descriptive.
- Put these in the correct order for a story: resolution, setting, problem, events.
- Write an informal email to a friend telling them about a book you have read (8 sentences).
- Write a short review of a film: title, actors, plot (without spoilers), your opinion (5 sentences).
- Correct the punctuation: "my friend sarah lives in london she has a cat called whiskers"
- Write a descriptive paragraph about your classroom. Use at least 5 adjectives and 3 prepositions.
