Present Simple vs Present Continuous - Worked examples and exercises
Worked example
Example 1: Choose the correct tense: "My sister _____ (play) the piano every afternoon."
Answer: My sister plays the piano every afternoon. We use Present Simple because "every afternoon" tells us it is a habit/routine. Remember: he/she/it + verb + s.
Worked example
Example 2: "Look! The children _____ (run) in the park."
Answer: Look! The children are running in the park. We use Present Continuous because "Look!" tells us it is happening right now. Structure: subject + am/is/are + verb-ing.
Worked example
Example 3: "She _____ (not like) tomatoes."
Answer: She doesn't like tomatoes. This is a fact (it is always true: she does not like them), so we use Present Simple negative: does not (doesn't) + base verb.
Worked example
Example 4: "We _____ (have) lunch right now. We usually _____ (have) lunch at 2 o'clock."
Answer: We are having lunch right now. (Present Continuous - happening now). We usually have lunch at 2 o'clock. (Present Simple - routine with "usually").
