Por ejemplo: An elephant is bigger than a dog (Un elefante es más grande que un perro) y The blue whale is the biggest animal in the world (La ballena azul es el animal más grande del mundo).

1. Adjetivos cortos (una sílaba): añadimos -er y -est.

2. Si terminan en -e: solo añadimos -r y -st: nice → nicer → the nicest.

3. Si terminan en consonante + vocal + consonante: doblamos la última consonante: big → bigger → the biggest; hot → hotter → the hottest.

4. Si terminan en -y: la y se cambia por i: happy → happier → the happiest; funny → funnier → the funniest.

5. Adjetivos largos (de tres sílabas o más, y muchos de dos): no cambian; ponemos more y the most delante: beautiful → more beautiful → the most beautiful; interesting → more interesting → the most interesting.

6. Irregulares: hay que aprenderlos de memoria.

Errores frecuentes: no se dice more big ni more better, sino bigger y better. Tampoco se dice beautifuller, sino more beautiful.

It is the best day of the week. (Es el mejor día de la semana.) Y en el comparativo, después de than va la segunda cosa que comparamos: My brother is older than me. (Mi hermano es mayor que yo.) Para decir que dos cosas son iguales usamos as … as: Tom is as tall as Ben. (Tom es tan alto como Ben.)

Ejemplo

Ejemplo 1. Completa: A car is ___ than a bike. (fast)

Ejemplo 2. Completa: Maths is ___ subject for me. (difficult)

Ejercicios

My cat is ___ than my dog. (small)

My birthday is the ___ day of the year! (happy)

Aprenderemos countable and uncountable nouns (sustantivos contables e incontables), y los cuantificadores some, any, much, many, a lot of.

Sustantivos contables e incontables

Countable (contables)Se pueden contar uno a unoapple, egg, banana, biscuit, carrotI have three apples.
Uncountable (incontables)No se pueden contar por unidadeswater, milk, rice, bread, cheese, sugarI have some water.
⚠️ Importante
Los sustantivos incontables (uncountable):
• No tienen plural: ❌ milks, rices, breads
• Usan el verbo en singular: ✅ Water is healthy. (no «Water are...»)
• No llevan a/an: ❌ a water → ✅ some water o a glass of water

Some / Any

PalabraSe usa enConEjemplo
SomeFrases afirmativasContables e incontablesThere are some apples. / There is some milk.
AnyFrases negativas y preguntasContables e incontablesAre there any eggs? / There isn't any bread.

✅ There is some cheese on the table. (Hay algo de queso en la mesa.)
❌ There aren't some bananas. → ✅ There aren't any bananas.
❌ Is there some milk? → ✅ Is there any milk?

Excepción: usamos some en preguntas cuando ofrecemos algo:
✅ Would you like some cake? (¿Quieres un poco de tarta?)

How much / How many

PreguntaSe usa conEjemploTraducción
How many...?Contables (plural)How many apples are there?¿Cuántas manzanas hay?
How much...?IncontablesHow much milk is there?¿Cuánta leche hay?
