Introducción
Cuando en español decimos «hay», en inglés usamos there is o there are. Por ejemplo: There is a cat in the box (Hay un gato en la caja). En esta lección aprenderás cuándo usar cada uno y cómo hacer frases negativas y preguntas.
Explicación
La regla es sencilla: depende de si hablamos de una cosa o de varias.
There is + una sola cosa (singular): There is a book on the table. (Hay un libro en la mesa.)
There are + dos o más cosas (plural): There are three apples in the basket. (Hay tres manzanas en la cesta.)
La forma corta de there is es there's: There's a dog in the park. De there are no usamos forma corta al escribir.
Frases negativas: añadimos not. Con cosas en plural solemos añadir any.
There isn't a garden. (No hay jardín.)
There aren't any chairs. (No hay sillas.)
Preguntas: cambiamos el orden y ponemos Is o Are delante:
Is there a TV in your bedroom? — Yes, there is. / No, there isn't.
Are there any books on the shelf? — Yes, there are. / No, there aren't.
Un truco: fíjate en la palabra que va después. Si es a, an o one, usa there is. Si es un número mayor que uno (two, three…), some, many o una palabra en plural terminada en -s, usa there are.
Recuerda que hay plurales que no terminan en -s: children (niños), people (personas), mice (ratones). También van con there are: There are ten children in the class.
Cuando nombramos varias cosas seguidas, miramos la primera: There is a bed and two chairs in my room. (Hay una cama y dos sillas en mi habitación.) Con there is / there are solemos decir también dónde está la cosa, con palabras como in (dentro de), on (encima de), under (debajo de) o next to (al lado de): There are two cats under the table. Así puedes describir tu clase, tu casa o tu calle: In my classroom there are twenty desks and there is a big board.

Ejemplo 1. Completa: ___ two windows in my bedroom.
Paso 1: two windows son dos cosas: plural.
Paso 2: con plural usamos there are.
Solución: There are two windows in my bedroom. (Hay dos ventanas en mi dormitorio.)
Ejemplo 2. Haz la pregunta: a park / near your house.
Paso 1: a park es una sola cosa: there is.
Paso 2: en la pregunta, is va delante.
Solución: Is there a park near your house?

🤔 ¿Sabías que...?
En las casas británicas tradicionales, el cuarto de baño a menudo no tiene inodoro. El inodoro está en una habitación separada llamada the toilet o the loo (informal). Así que en Reino Unido, bathroom puede significar solo el cuarto con la bañera.
